OPP warns: one simple mistake could cost your life this long weekend

OPP wants to make sure everyone is having a safe holiday weekend.

The Ontario Provincial Police are urging people to make safety a top priority this long weekend, whether on the water or on the road.

OPP spokesperson Bill Dickson says Eastern Ontario has already seen a dozen drownings this summer, many of them preventable. He says the only life jacket that can save your life is the one you're wearing.

For those hitting the road, Dickson says to expect heavy traffic and delays. Drivers should stay patient and avoid speeding, aggressive moves, or distracted driving.

Extra OPP officers will be out this long weekend and the remainder of summer.

Dickson also reminds drivers to slow down and move over when passing emergency vehicles or tow trucks. He says it’s about protecting the people working to keep everyone safe.
