The money comes from the $200-million Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund (CSRIF), a province-wide effort to improve local facilities and support healthy, active living.
Neil Lumsden, Minister of Sport, was also in attendance, and shared the significance of this investment.
Mayor Jim Hegadorn say the investment will help protect local jobs, support families, and grow the economy.
The centre, built nearly 50 years ago, serves around 75,000 people. Plans include a new aquatic facility, arena improvements, and work to make the building more energy-efficient and accessible. These changes will help cut operating costs and allow the centre to host large sporting events at the provincial, national and international level.
Opening day of the aquatic centre is still set for third quarter 2026.
