Construction begins this week

Construction begins this week on the National Memorial to the Fallen in Kingston’s Macdonald Park. The project, led by the National Wall of Remembrance Association (NWORA) and the City of Kingston, honours over 120,000 Canadians who lost their lives in military service.

Crews will begin work Tuesday, June 17, with excavation scheduled for Wednesday. The memorial’s unveiling is planned for September 2025.

“This memorial is the result of nearly 15 years of planning and fundraising,” said NWORA Vice-Chair Bruce Ewing.

Macdonald Park, located in Kingston’s historic Old Sydenham District, was chosen for its military significance. The City approved the memorial plan in 2022, and a sod-turning ceremony took place in 2023.

City staff worked closely with NWORA, completing archaeological reviews and environmental testing, and ensuring trees removed for the build will be replaced.

Once complete, the monument will become part of Kingston’s Civic Collection, with NWORA providing funds for future upkeep.
