Military trial begins at CFB Kingston as soldier pleads not guilty to serious charges

Cpl. Daniel Awong is facing six serious charges, including sexual assault causing bodily harm.

A long-awaited court martial is underway at CFB Kingston, where Cpl. Daniel Awong is facing six serious charges, including sexual assault causing bodily harm, extortion, and forcible confinement. The alleged incidents happened in Kingston between September and November 2020.

Awong pleaded not guilty to all charges on Wednesday, the second day of the trial. A publication ban remains in place to protect the identity of the complainant.

The trial, taking place at the Canadian Forces Joint Signal Regiment, is being led by military prosecutors Maj. Reede and Maj. Vinet-Gasse. Awong is represented by civilian lawyers Devin Bains and Natalie Simpson.

After hearing concerns about the complainant’s trauma and stress, military judge Cmdr. Martin Pelletier approved the use of CCTV for testimony.

Despite the complainant’s absence on Wednesday, the judge refused to delay the trial further. Prosecutors must present an alternate plan by Thursday.

The trial is set to wrap by July 4.
