Military helicopters, blank gunfire expected near Kingston Airport this week

Members of the Royal Canadian Air Force and Military Police are conducting security training at the airport.

People near Kingston Airport may hear gunfire and see helicopters this week as the Canadian Armed Forces carry out aircraft security training.

The Department of National Defence says members of the Royal Canadian Air Force and Military Police will be training at the airport on Tuesday, July 29, and Wednesday, July 30, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The exercise will include the use of blank ammunition, military personnel in uniform with firearms, and a CH-147F Chinook helicopter from Garrison Petawawa’s 450 Tactical Helicopter Squadron.

Officials say the airport will stay open and that all activity is part of a planned training session by the Aircraft Security Officer Course.

The Department of National Defence thanked the Kingston community for its support, saying the exercise helps maintain the Canadian Armed Forces’ readiness.

The public is advised not to be alarmed by the sounds or sights during the two-day event.
