This comes after a planned pilot project was scrapped.
Kingston City Council will be discussing a motion asking VIA Rail to make a commitment to Kingston.
The motion being presented at Tuesday's meeting by Mayor Bryan Patterson calls on the company to maintain its existing passenger rail service levels in the Toronto–Montreal corridor through Kingston.
It also asks that VIA Rail works with the city and municipal partners to establish a survey and gather data that would support the introduction of a new late-night train departing from Toronto to Kingston.
Patterson's motion comes over a week after VIA Rail decided to postpone a planned pilot project.
That project would have seen four trains running between Toronto and Montreal operate non-stop by-passing stops in Eastern Ontario including Kingston.
Patterson along with MP Mark Gerretsen, MPP Ted Hsu, and residents have been vocal over their opposition of having Kingston be excluded as a stop on the route.
VIA Rail has maintained that the changes were in response to passenger demand for faster service between the two cities.
