A man serving a life sentence for the murder his sisters and his father's first wife in what was described as an honour killing has been given escorted absences.
Hamed Shafia had a hearing with the Parole Board of Canada last Friday and was granted escorted absences from a medium-security prison where he is serving his sentence.
Shafia was 18 when he, and his parents were convicted of first-degree murder in the deaths of 19-year-old Zainab Shafia, 17-year-old Sahar Shafia, 13-year-old Geeti Shafia and 52-year-old Rona Amir Mohammad in 2012. Police investigators say the four drowned inside a car that was dumped in the Rideau River in Kingston in 2009.
The now 34-year-old will be given brief visits to a minimum-security facility. He was, however, denied an escorted absence to a mosque in Kingston.
