City’s $3M plan is making progress.
Kingston’s effort to recruit family doctors is showing major progress, with a new report suggesting the city’s waiting list could be eliminated by the end of 2025.
Since launching its $3-million recruitment program in 2022, the city has attracted 25 new family doctors.
Seventeen replaced retiring physicians, keeping 14,500 patients attached to care, while eight are new doctors who have taken on 8,100 previously unattached patients.
A 2024 grant program helped clinics roster 11,700 more patients without hiring new doctors. Kingston also joined an Eastern Ontario recruitment alliance, drawing international doctors, and secured provincial funding to recruit two bilingual physicians.
Despite the success, city officials say another $600,000 is needed to maintain progress as more doctors retire.
They also urge residents without a doctor to register with Health Care Connect.
City Council will discuss the report at its April 1 meeting.
