These new developments will include buildings ranging from 15 to 20 storeys tall.
The City of Kingston is moving to the next stage of a major revitalization plan for North King’s Town (NKT) to attract 13,000 new residents.
At the March 18, 2025, council meeting, officials approved zoning changes to allow high-rise apartments and commercial spaces along the Montreal Street corridor. These new developments will include buildings ranging from 15 to 20 storeys tall.
This rejuvenation project has been in the works since 2016, following a pause due to the pandemic.
The approved plan allows for up to 7,380 residential units within NKT, with new bike lanes, sidewalks, and transit options. The area’s industrial land will be converted to mixed-use residential spaces.
While some residents have raised concerns about building height, traffic, and parkland, planners aim to ensure future developments blend well with surrounding areas, including the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Rideau Canal.
Officials say the project’s goal is to breathe new life into a largely underutilized part of Kingston.
