Kingston tourism pioneer to receive lifetime achievement award

John Wright is being credited with making the Limestone City a tourist destination.

A Kingston businessman is being recognized for his tourism initiatives.

John Wright will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Ontario Tourism Summit in Ottawa.

Wright is being credited with making Kingston a tourist destination. He has trained and mentored a number of people into becoming leaders in the industry.

One of them is Hugh Mackenzie, an archivist and advisor with Kingston Destination Group.

Mackenzie recalls the time he was hired by Wright to help run Kingston and the Islands Boat Lines in 1991 and how he was entrusted guide the company.

In addition to the boat cruise, Wright and his wife Kim bought the Kingston Trolley Tours. He also worked in radio and once owned and ran a station in Kingston.

Mackenzie says Wright has been able to put his stamp in every venture he has been a part of.

Even though Wright has received so many accolades, he remains a very private man.

Mackenzie says Wright is not one who brings attention to himself.

Andrew Siegwart, President and CEO, Tourism Industry Association of Ontario said in a statement that "(Wright's) visionary leadership and commitment to excellence have significantly shaped Ontario's tourism landscape, setting a high standard for visitor experiences and community pride."

A ceremony will take place next Tuesday at 12 Noon at the Ottawa Conference & Event Centre.
