Kingston takes flight with exciting events for World Migratory Bird Day

The City will be unveiling the official bird of Kingston.

City of Kingston is inviting bird lovers to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day on Saturday, Oct. 11, with activities for all ages.

The city is teaming up with Kingston Field Naturalists, Little Forests Kingston and 1000 Islands Master Gardeners to highlight this year’s theme: “Shared Spaces: Creating Bird Friendly Cities & Communities.”

The day kicks off with a $25 hedgerow workshop from 10 to 11:30 a.m., where participants will learn how to create habitats for migratory birds.

From 1 to 2:30 p.m., the Kingston Fall Birding Festival at Doug Fluhrer Park will feature a guided birdwatching walk along the Cataraqui River. Admission is free and binoculars will be provided.

The city will also reveal its new official City Bird, chosen through a community vote.

“Bird-friendly means making our environment safe and welcoming for birds,” said Karen Santucci, Director of Public Works and Solid Waste.

Organizers hope the celebration inspires more residents to help make Kingston a safer place for birds year-round.
