Kingston para-triathlete selected to represent Canada in Japan this October

A local athlete living with myoclonus dystonia is preparing for an international competition after a challenging medical season.

Kingston para-triathlete Casey Kidson is preparing to represent Canada at an international competition in Japan next month.

Kidson, who competes in swimming, cycling and running, has been selected to compete at the 2026 World Triathlon Para Cup Chiba on Oct. 12.

She shares her initial reaction with KingstonDaily.ca.

The competition will feature an elite para-triathlon sprint distance, including a 750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike ride and five-kilometre run.

Alongside her athletic career, Kidson is also an advocate for people with disabilities and works to raise awareness about opportunities in adaptive sport.

She shares when she first got involved in the sport.

Para-triathlon is a competitive form of triathlon for athletes with physical disabilities. Depending on their needs, athletes may use assistive equipment such as handcycles, tandem bicycles, racing wheelchairs or prosthetics.

Kidson competes with myoclonus dystonia, a neurological movement disorder, and says reaching the international stage follows a challenging medical season. She explains more.

The sport provides athletes with an opportunity to compete while showcasing endurance, strength and adaptability.

Kidson says representing Canada internationally is an important milestone in her para-triathlon journey and an opportunity to share her story with the Kingston community.
