Kingston Native Centre puts knowledge sharing at the centre of reconciliation efforts

The Kingston Native Centre and Language Nest is highlighting storytelling and education as the city prepares to mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The Kingston Native Centre and Language Nest is putting knowledge sharing and storytelling at the centre of local efforts to mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The day is observed Sept. 30 to honour residential school Survivors, their families and communities, while keeping the history and legacy of residential schools central to reconciliation. Executive director Brandon Maracle explains more.

Maracle also explains the centre’s role.

The centre is encouraging the community to learn from Indigenous stories and perspectives as Kingston marks the day and Orange Shirt Day. Maracle says remembering the past remains an important part of reconciliation.

The City of Kingston is also marking the day. The 94 Calls to Action will be displayed at Confederation Basin from Sept. 28 to Oct. 2. City Hall will be lit orange Sept. 30, and an Every Child Matters flag will be raised.

A community walk will also begin at McBurney Park at 5 p.m. Sept. 30.
