Kingston just funded a greenhouse that grows 10,000 heads of lettuce with no soil

Proactive approach to food insecurity

A local greenhouse project that grows food with no soil and 90 per cent less water just got a major boost.

The GrowAbility Hydroponic Greenhouse Project has reached its $30,000 fundraising goal through the 2025 Kingston Community Climate Action Fund (KCCAF).

With the funding, Extend-A-Family Kingston will now upgrade and expand two hydroponic greenhouses, which can grow over 10,000 heads of fresh produce every year. The year-round system cuts emissions, saves water, and avoids long-distance transportation.

“This project will provide healthy, local food and create new opportunities for people of all abilities,” said Soren Christianson with the City of Kingston.

KCCAF’s success was made possible by the Kingston Community Credit Union and generous public support.

“It's not just about food — it's about sustainability and belonging,” said Ian Cholmondeley with Extend-A-Family Kingston.

Now in its fifth year, KCCAF supports community-led climate solutions with 100 per cent of donations going to local projects.
