This is ATV Safety Awareness Week across Ontario.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Ontario Federation of ATV Clubs (OFATV) are teaming up for ATV Safety Awareness Week, running from May 30 to June 8th.
Last year, 34 people died in OPP-investigated off-road vehicle incidents. Of those, 18 were not wearing helmets, and 15 were under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The campaign urges riders to always wear an approved helmet, drive sober, and avoid speeding. Riders should operate within their skill level and be cautious on unfamiliar or uneven terrain. Proper vehicle maintenance is also essential for safe off-roading.
The OPP stresses the importance of setting a positive example, especially for youth and new riders. Parents are encouraged to enroll young riders in Ontario’s online ATV Training Course for Youth to help instill safe habits from the start.
