Heat warning continues in Kingston area for early part of week

Daytime highs are expected to reach between 29 and 32 degrees Celsius, with humidex values soaring as high as 40.

A heat warning remains in effect for Kingston, Odessa and the Frontenac Islands as southern Ontario endures a stretch of dangerously high temperatures and humidity.

Environment Canada says daytime highs are expected to reach between 29 and 32 degrees Celsius, with humidex values soaring as high as 40. Overnight temperatures will remain warm, offering little relief, with lows hovering around 19 to 23 degrees.

The heat wave is forecast to continue until at least Thursday.

Officials urge people to take steps to protect their health, particularly vulnerable individuals such as seniors and those living alone. Signs of heat-related illness include nausea, dizziness, and fatigue, while heat stroke is a medical emergency.

Residents are encouraged to drink water often, stay indoors in cool places, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat hours and check on at-risk neighbours and family.

How to stay safe during extreme heat:

Drink water frequently

Stay in cool places with air conditioning or fans when possible.

Visit cooling centres, libraries, community centres or shaded public spaces if your home is too hot.

Limit outdoor activities, especially between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.

Keep your home cool by closing blinds or curtains during the day and opening windows at night if it’s cooler outside.

Check on older adults, people living alone, and others at higher risk for heat-related illness.

Watch for symptoms of heat exhaustion: headache, dizziness, nausea, dark urine, or extreme fatigue.

Treat heat stroke as a medical emergency — call 9-1-1 and take immediate steps to cool the person.

Never leave children, pets, or anyone unattended in a parked vehicle.

Take regular breaks if working or exercising outdoors.

Follow advice from your local public health authority.
