A breakthrough treatment in breast cancer is now available at Kingston Health Sciences Centre.
The Magnetic Occult Lesion Localization Instrument (MOLLI) is a wire-free and radiation-free technology that allows radiologists to locate and mark a breast tumor prior to surgery.
Neuro radiologist Dr. Omar Islam says this means surgeons have a better idea as to where to remove the tumor.
Islam says this will also mean a patient's recovery time will be reduced.
MOLLI was developed by a team led by Queen's alumnus, Dr. Nicole Look Hong at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto.
KHSC was able to receive the technology through a $175,000 donation from local resident Stephen Sorensen.
Islam says this type of equipment will completely change the way breast cancer surgery is done.
Islam says acquiring this advanced technology will further cement KHSC's reputation as one of Canada’s leading centres for breast cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment.
