The Gaels welcome TMU at the Memorial Centre on Friday.
The Queen's Gaels women's hockey team are set to hit the ice for their season opener.
Head coach Morgan McHaffie says it has been a busy off-season for both her and the rest of the coaching staff as they prepare to compete for an OUA championship.
The team has been holding training camp away from their home as work on the Memorial Centre ice was being done.
They held practices and scrimmages at the INVISTA Centre and other facilities.
The Gaels are coming off a season where they finished eight games under .500 (11-19-0) and fell to the Nippissing Lakers in the quarterfinals.
McHaffie says she has been impressed with how well the team has progressed since the start of training camp.
Goaltender Emma Tennant and forward Mikayla Cranny are a couple of returning players that McHaffie will be leaning on not only for their on-ice play but also for leadership.
McHaffie expects a defensive-minded team that will find opportunities to score this season.
The Gaels open their OUA season at home to the TMU (Toronto Metropolitan University) Bold at the Memorial Centre Friday afternoon.
Game time is at 3 p.m.
