Another 23 to 45 mm of rain is expected to come down this week.
Kingston area residents are being warned of potential flooding as Cataraqui Conservation issues a Flood Watch for inland lakes and streams. Rising water levels are caused by ongoing snowmelt and recent rainfall, with more rain expected this week.
Recent temperatures above 10°C and rainfall between 6 and 20 mm, with some areas seeing over 30 mm, have already increased streamflows. An additional 23 to 45 mm of rain is forecast from March 10 to 12, mostly on March 11. Temperatures will remain above zero until March 12, then drop below freezing for several days.
Several creeks, including Wilton, Millhaven, Collins, and Lyn, are already at all-time March highs. Water levels in the Gananoque River system and associated lakes could also rise above seasonal averages. Ice jams and shoreline damage are possible as ice weakens during warm weather.
Cataraqui Conservation urges caution near dams, fast-flowing water, and ice-covered areas. Residents in low-lying or flood-prone areas should protect property and avoid water hazards. The Flood Watch remains in effect until March 18. Updates are available at Cataraqui Conservation’s website.
