While previously high water levels have improved, extremely cold temperatures could increase the risk of ice formation and localized flooding.
Cataraqui Conservation has extended a Flood Watch for Millhaven Creek in Loyalist Township, covering areas from south of Highway 401 to the creek’s outlet at Lake Ontario. Some previously high water levels have improved, but extremely cold temperatures expected starting January 23 could increase the risk of ice formation and localized flooding.
Wind chill values are forecast below -18 °C starting January 23, dropping to below -30 °C on January 24. Cold conditions may cause frazil ice to form on bridges, piers, and riverbanks, raising water levels upstream of blockages.
Local areas previously reporting high water include Ham Road near L&A County Road 4 and Lucas Road near Millhaven Road. Residents in low-lying areas are advised to remove items from floodplains.
Cataraqui Conservation urges caution around dams, fast-flowing water, and slippery creek banks. The Flood Watch remains in effect until January 28 at 11:59 p.m.
