Director of Education says while students are doing well in writing and reading, math needs a bit of work.

The Director of Education and Chief Education Officer at the Limestone District School Board is pleased with the latest results from the Education Quality and Accountability Office.

It showed that students met or exceeded the provincial average in five of the eight categories of assessment especially in the area of literacy.

Krishna Burra says the results show they have been making steady progress over the years.

One area of concern for the school board is in mathematics. Grades 6 and 9 math results were slightly below the provincial average.

That is something Burra says they will look to improve on.

Education Minister Paul Callandra issued a statement after the release of the EQAO results last Friday saying too many students continue to struggle, achievement gaps persist and results remain uneven across the province.

He has directed the ministry to work directly with school boards in reviewing its student achievement plan and monitor its progress.

Burra is agreement with Callandra saying it is important for all school boards to work with the ministry in developing new strategies to support students in their education.
