Council grants homeowner's request to remove heritage designation over insurance costs

Council is also asking the province why properties with the designation have higher insurance rates.

Kerri Shea is hoping for changes to the Ontario Heritage Act and to uncover why the insurance premiums are significantly higher for designated properties.

The homeowner lives in a 19th-century farmhouse across over 60 acres at 2555 Highway 38.

The city's heritage committee declined her repeal request last month so Shea said she went to council looking for a different outcome.

She said they told her the removal of her designation could set a "dangerous precedent," leading to a greater loss of local heritage.

Shea disputed that.

Shea further argues the point that removing certain designation is an attack on local heritage, by arguing the opposite.

City council's asking the province to look into why insurance premiums are higher for heritage designated properties, while also later siding with Shea and granting her the de-designation she sought.
