The South East Health Unit is marking International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31 with a powerful message: One Big Family, Driven by Hope.
Dr. Linna Li, Deputy Medical Officer of Health, said the theme highlights how overdose impacts not only individuals but entire communities. “It’s about healing, prevention, and supporting one another,” she explained.
The region has reported more than a dozen local confirmed and probable overdose deaths this year.
David Amot, Mental Health and Substance Use Public Nurse Coordinator says they take a strength in numbers approach work best.
Public health partners include addiction centres, emergency responders, youth groups, libraries, and food banks. Harm reduction strategies, such as Naloxone training and needle drop boxes, play a key role in saving lives while connecting people to treatment and care.
