Council approved the change with a pair of amendments.
City council voted to change the name of Indian Rd. in a 7-3 vote Tuesday night but the process will include consultation from local residents and Indigenous community representatives.
Executive director of the Kingston Native Centre and Language Nest Brandon Maracle said words used to describe Indigenous communities can be complicated.
Daniel Shipp lives on the street and shared his thoughts on its name.
Councillor Jeff McLaren successfully passed two motion amendments to ensure the original reason for naming Indian Rd. would be preserved, and sought consultation with additional groups.
He said council shouldn't rush to change the street name before its origins are understood.
Councillor Gregory Ridge spoke to his intentions on the motion.
City staff will report back next year with the results of the public consultation, as well as a report on potential compensation for residents impacted by the name change and possible alternative names.
