The City will be taking over from the Kingston and Area Taxi Commission on October 1.
The taxi industry in Kingston will soon be under new management.
Starting on October 1, the City of Kingston will be taking over responsibility for the licensing and governance of taxis in the city from the Kingston and Area Taxi Commission.
Director of Licensing and Enforcement Services Kyle Compeau says this an important transition one that he hopes will not affect the public too much.
It's been over a year since Kingston City Council decided to dissolve the Kingston and Area Taxi Commission. The lack of financial transparency was one of the reasons the City will soon be overseeing the local taxi industry.
In addition to issuing taxi licenses, the City will also be handling complaints, inspections and monitoring for compliance.
The KATC administrative office will be moving to the City's Building and Planning office on John Counter Blvd.
Compeau says they will be periodically report to Council on the governance of the taxi industry.
