Have travel documents ready and be prepared to declare everything you're bringing into Canada.
With summer travel season underway, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is urging travellers to plan ahead when crossing the border. In 2024, the CBSA welcomed over 93.4 million travellers, intercepted more than 34,000 kg of illegal drugs, and kept over 17,000 weapons off Canadian streets.
To ensure safe and efficient travel, CBSA officers work around the clock, especially during peak periods like weekends and holidays. Travellers may experience wait times due to behind-the-scenes security checks, including screenings for drugs, firearms, and high-risk individuals.
To help speed up your crossing, have travel documents ready and be prepared to declare everything you're bringing into Canada, including goods purchased abroad. Canadians returning home should know their personal exemption limits and surtax rules on certain U.S. goods. Air travellers can save time by using the Advance Declaration tool at participating airports.
Drivers should check border wait times, travel early in the day, and consider alternate ports of entry. Boat operators and campers should also review reporting requirements and restrictions—firewood from outside Canada is not allowed.
For more information or questions, visit the CBSA website or call 1-800-461-9999. When in doubt, ask a border officer.
