Belleville synagogue shooting confirmed as hate-motivated attack

Investigators have found evidence providing more detail about the suspect’s intent, but they are not ready to release it.

Belleville police say a shooting outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue during Yom Kippur was a targeted, hate-motivated attack against the Jewish community.

Police Chief Murray Rodd said Thursday the Sept. 20 incident met provincial definitions of an extreme incident and an active attacker situation, with evidence showing the suspect had the means to cause mass casualties.

Police said the suspect had a shotgun, other weapons and a significant amount of ammunition. Gasoline and other potentially combustible materials were also found in his vehicle.

Chief Rodd said investigators have found evidence providing more detail about the suspect’s intent, but they are not ready to release it. Electronic devices and computers are still being examined.

Police also confirmed the suspect conducted reconnaissance at the synagogue earlier that same day. Chief Rodd said the suspect made a first pass while an officer was present before returning and ambushing the officer.

Const. Jeff Smith was shot before he could fully exit his police vehicle but still engaged the attacker. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds, fractures, other injuries and shrapnel wounds and is expected to undergo several surgeries.

Const. Mike McCurdy arrived about two minutes and 47 seconds after the gunfight began and immediately moved toward the danger. Police said McCurdy was not injured.

Ontario Solicitor General Michael Kerzner condemned the attack and called for continued action against antisemitism.

The RCMP is assisting Belleville police through its Ottawa national security enforcement team, but Belleville police remain the lead agency.

Police said they have no information substantiating reports of links between the suspect and white supremacist groups.

Chief Rodd said there is no indication of a broader threat to other communities.
