The ALS Canada Walk to End ALS at Lake Ontario Park smashed its fundraising goal on Saturday as 285 people came together to raise more than $110,000 for ALS research, services, and advocacy.
Organizers had set a target of $45,000, but by Saturday morning pledges had already reached $105,000. By the end of the day, over $110,000 had been raised.
Kingston hosts the largest community ALS fundraiser in Canada. The event is part of ALS Awareness Month, which includes 22 walks across Ontario and a virtual option for participants unable to attend in person.
ALS affects about 4,000 Canadians, with 1,000 new diagnoses and 1,000 deaths each year. The disease remains incurable, with most patients living only two to five years after diagnosis.
Ontario’s overall fundraising goal for June is $2 million. So far, the province has raised $1.5 million.
