Megan Wheatley took on the world's tallest free-standing mountain and reached the summit.
A Kingston woman is talking about her rise to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Megan Wheatley made the trek up the world's tallest free-standing mountain in Africa on Aug. 17. It took her eight days and over 5,000 metres to reach the summit.
Wheatley says the climb at times was difficult but felt amazing when she finally completed her journey.
Wheatley decided over the summer that she would climb Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise awareness about brain injuries and money for the Community Brain Injury Services at Providence Care.
She suffered a severe brain injury from a car crash in 2013 when she was 17. The collision impacted her ability to do a number of things.
Wheatley says she has been able to meet others who have experienced brain trauma while training for the climb.
Wheatley initially had a fundraising goal of $3,000. It later went up to $5,000. She finished with over $7,500.
Now that she is back home, Wheatley doesn't know what's next for her. For the time being, she is taking it easy.
Wheatly says she appreciates the support she has received and hopes this will inspire others with brain injuries that anything is possible.
