Today we are looking at Forman Farms in Seeley’s Bay.
For Lois Kennedy, farming is about much more than growing food — it's about hard work, family, community and leaving the land in good shape for the generations that follow.
Forman Farms has been part of the Eastern Ontario agricultural landscape since 1973. What began as a dairy farm eventually transitioned to crop farming in 1986, with the operation adopting no-till and minimum-tillage practices to help protect the soil. In 2003, the farm expanded again, adding greenhouse operations for tomatoes, field vegetables, fruits and flowers.
Today, Forman Farms is a fully diversified operation, producing everything from soybeans, corn, canola and wheat to fresh produce, flowers and landscape mulch. The farm also offers landscaping, seasonal décor and wedding services, creating even more ways to connect with the local community.
Kennedy says one of the biggest lessons that comes from farm life is the value of hard work. Farming doesn't follow a nine-to-five schedule, and plans can change quickly with the weather or equipment. She says that teaches patience, adaptability, resourcefulness and a deep respect for the land.
Sustainability is also a major part of Forman Farms. From composting and crop rotation to cover crops, no-till farming and water and soil management, the farm is constantly looking for ways to grow responsibly while reducing its environmental impact.
Kennedy says she's proud of the work being done at Forman Farms and the satisfaction that comes from contributing to the community. Looking toward the future, she hopes the next generation carries forward that same commitment to family, hard work, agriculture and supporting local communities.
She also encourages young people interested in agriculture to get hands-on experience, find mentors and explore the many career paths available today — from farming and business management to technology and environmental sciences.
