Domino Theatre brings Margaret Edson’s acclaimed drama W;t to the stage January 15–31.
Domino Theatre is bringing the Pulitzer Prize–winning drama W;t to Kingston this month, offering audiences a powerful and emotional night at the theatre.
Written by Margaret Edson and directed by Martha Bailey, W;t runs from Jan. 15 to 31 at Domino Theatre on Church Street. The play stars Helen Bretzke in the demanding lead role of Dr. Vivian Bearing.
Winner of the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, W;t follows Dr. Bearing, a respected scholar of 17th-century metaphysical poetry, as she undergoes aggressive treatment for advanced ovarian cancer. The story moves between the classroom and the hospital, blending sharp intellect with raw emotion.
Director, Martha Bailey says more.
The play explores themes of compassion, dignity, and human connection, especially at life’s most vulnerable moments.
While the subject matter is serious, W;t also includes moments of wit and unexpected humour.
Bretzke’s performance carries the audience through Vivian’s intellectual confidence, emotional reckoning, and quiet grace. Under Bailey’s direction, the production highlights the balance between intellect and empathy at the heart of the story.
Bailey speaks more about the writer of the play, Margaret Edson.
Domino Theatre says the production continues its tradition of presenting thoughtful works that resonate with modern audiences.
Performances run Thursday to Saturday through Jan. 31. Tickets are available through Domino Theatre’s box office and website.
