What's Good in Kingston: The Spire enters Next Great Save

The organization is looking for votes to help them win one of three cash prizes to replace their aging heating system.

The Spire in Kingston is looking to bring some heat in a national contest.

They are competing in the Next Great Save that is giving away $65,000 in cash prizes towards projects that will help protect cherished heritage places. It is being run by the National Trust for Canada and sponsored by Ecclesiastical Insurance.

General Manager at the Spire Sam MacLeod says they hope win the $50,000 grand prize that will be used to upgrade the aging heating system in their 174-year-old building on Sydenham St.

He says it has become problematic and is threating the future of holding activities year-round.

The Spire, which is located inside Sydenham United Church, is one of many landmarks that symbolizes Kingston.

MacLeod says it is important to save these institutions.

While some groups would organize a fundraising campaign or set up a crowdsourcing account such as Go Fund Me to pay for necessary things, the Spire is taking this approach where it competes with other entrants who are also looking to make improvements to their chosen landmarks.

MacLeod says they will use any method to raise the money needed to cover the cost of upgrades.

He says there are many groups and organizations that use the space.

There are also cash prizes of $10,000 and $5,000 available to be won.

Voting for the Next Great Save begins on Tuesday, April 7 and runs until Friday, April 24. The winner will be announced on April 24 at 5 pm.
