What's good in Kingston? The return of a tourism favourite

Tours resume at Kingston Penitentary

The doors, and prison cells, at one of Canada's oldest institutions are now open to the public.

The St. Lawrence Parks Commission are once again holding tours this summer at the former Kingston Penitentiary.

Visitors to the 190-year-old structure will be welcomed by those who use to work inside the maximum-security facility.

Manager of Kingston Pen Tours, Greg Gouthro, says they will be available to give their insight into Canada's most notorious prison.

There have been tours taking place at the penitentiary since 2016, 3 years after it was decommissioned.

Gouthro says the place holds a lot of history.

There are 3 different types of tours available.

One is the standard 90-minute tour, there is also one that goes 45 minutes, and another that last around 2 1/2 hours.

Gouthro says each tour will take visitors around areas of the prison.

The building is open for tours seven days a week until Oct. 31.

Gouthro suggests people book their spots in advance to avoid long waits.
