Community-driven effort has delivered more than 170,000 pairs since 2016 and is launching new adult sock collection events.
A grassroots group in Kingston is proving that small items can make a big difference.
Socks Kingston began in 2016 and has since collected and distributed more than 170,000 pairs of new socks to over 35 local organizations across the city. The group is now running new collection events focused on adult socks. Administrator and Coordinator for SOCKS Kingston, Michelle Hiebert explains more.
Hiebert says that socks are one of the most needed items at shelters.
Socks Kingston is not a registered charity and does not accept cash donations. Instead, it operates entirely through in-kind sock donations. Organizers say they can provide confirmation emails for donors if needed. Hiebert says that each pair of socks donated represent the generosity residents in Kingston
The group supports a wide range of agencies, including AMHS-KFLA, Partners in Mission, Kingston Community Health Centres, Kingston HomeBase Non-Profit Housing and Kingston Interval House.
It also assists shelters and outreach programs such as Salvation Army, Martha's Table and Kingston Youth Shelter.
Organizers say the need remains high. In recent years, even some local schools have asked for new socks to support students in need.
Michelle Hiebert says they are holding a collection event at Cataraqui Centre in the lower level near centre court on Feb. 28th from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
You can drop off new socks for people in need!
