Doctor Li explains the public health connection to Pride
June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate diversity and reflect on the challenges 2SLGBT+ individuals still face.
Dr. Linna Li, Deputy Medical Officer of Health for the South East Health Unit, says Pride is not just a celebration — it’s part addressing a public health issue.
She says gender identity and sexual orientation can directly or indirectly affect a person’s health. From barriers to health care and housing to increased risk of violence and mental illness, discrimination has lasting effects.
Li Adds there is also strength as 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals have created support networks and shown incredible resilience.
The health unit is marking Pride by improving inclusive services, training staff, and joining local events.
The doctor also notes that the health unit strives to be allies during Pride and throughout the year.
