What’s Good in Kingston: QMed Fights Cancer

Annual hockey game returns March 7 to raise funds for brain cancer research.

Medical students and doctors will hit the ice March 7 as QMed Fights Cancer hosts its fourth annual charity hockey game at Slush Puppie Place.

The event supports the Canadian Cancer Society and was created in honour of former medical student, now Dr. Geordie Maguire, who was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour in 2022 while in medical school. Organizers say his strength and optimism inspired classmates to launch the fundraiser, which has raised more than $300,000 for research over three years.

Students from Queen’s University will face staff and resident physicians in a friendly but competitive matchup, with puck drop set for 4 p.m.

2nd year resident doctor and co-founder of QMed, Molly Cowls explains more.

Second-year medical student Rebekah Feld says the game brings the community together while supporting patients and families facing brain cancer.

Organizers add every dollar raised will go toward research into new treatments and better quality of life for patients.

Dr. Cowls says that she appreciates the opportunity to support her patients outside of the hospital.

Tickets are available now, and more information can be found on the event website. https://www.qmedfightscancer.ca/home
