What's Good in Kingston: Overcoming anxiety with improv

Improv Kingston says its classes empower, inspire and entertain people of all ages across the city.

Improv Kingston helps people build confidence and connection through improvisational theatre in Kingston!

The group offers improv classes and live events for residents, community groups and organizations. Its mission is to empower, inspire and entertain using improv.

Improv Kingston is led by teacher Dan Walmsely, a veteran of the Toronto improv scene. He says improv is a versatile art form that supports teamwork, communication and mental well-being. It is used as a confidence booster, a social outlet and a tool to reduce anxiety.

Walmsely has trained at The Second City and Bad Dog Theatre and follows the Keith Johnstone approach to improv.

He says improv is collaborative storytelling that anyone can learn and has seen confidence grow and social barriers break down in just weeks. Students report improved public speaking skills, better communication, and a stronger sense of self-awareness.

Improv Kingston continues to produce live shows and engaging workshops for all ages.

Walmsely encourages anyone curious about improv to try a class, promising it is not only fun but also a meaningful way to develop personal and professional skills while connecting with the Kingston community.
