What's Good in Kingston: Open house reveals how Kingston food bank really works — and you’re invited inside

Community members can tour the facility and learn how donations support local families.

The Partners in Mission Food Bank is inviting the public to step inside its operations during an open house later this month.

The event is set for Saturday, May 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at their new location, 4 Harvey St. Visitors will be able to tour the facility, including the food bank’s shopping area, and learn how its programs support people across the Kingston region.

Executive director Dan Irwin says the open house comes about a year after moving into the new space.

Irwin says the event is a chance to show how donations are used and how food moves through the system to reach those in need.

He says organizers also want the public to see what their support has helped make possible.

The food bank provides non-perishable items along with fresh foods such as milk, eggs, fruits and vegetables. It also acts as a distribution hub, supplying surplus food to local meal programs and shelters.

Irwin says some aspects of the operation may surprise visitors.

Officials say both monetary and food donations remain critical to helping meet growing demand in the community.
