The One Parent Families Association of Canada is a volunteer-run, non-profit organization that provides social support, affordable recreation and community connections for single-parent families.
The active branch for Kingston and the area is called the Limestone Chapter.
It's open to parents who are separated, divorced, widowed or have never married. Limestone chapter president Doug Brown tells us of their main focus.
The association organizes activities ranging from family outings and camping trips to sports nights, movie events and community gatherings. Its goal is to reduce isolation, strengthen support networks and help families create lasting memories without the high cost of traditional recreation. Camping is a popular activity with the group this time of year as Brown notes.
The group fundraises through volleyball tournaments to be able to cover activities' costs for children. Some chapters also offer children's activity subsidies for eligible members who volunteer with the organization. Learn more at oneparentfamilies.ca.
