Rachel Szabo returns to the Kingston Symphony after performing across Canada and Europe
Kingston-born flutist Rachel Szabo is coming home in a new role while continuing her international performing career. This fall, she will join the Kingston Symphony as Second Flute and Piccolo after a successful audition, bringing her musical journey full circle. Szabo says her musical career started in Kingston.
She says the appointment is especially meaningful because she will fill the same position once held by her first flute teacher, Anne Palmer.
Szabo began studying flute at just four years old and developed her skills through the Kingston Youth Orchestra and the LEAP program at Calvin Park Public School. Both of her early teachers were members of the Kingston Symphony.
Her career has taken her across Canada and Europe, with performances alongside the Canadian Opera Company, National Arts Centre Orchestra, Copenhagen Philharmonic and Opéra de Lyon. She also served as Acting Second Flute with the Victoria Symphony and continues to perform with orchestras in Canada and abroad. Szabo reflects on her career.
Szabo said joining the Kingston Symphony is a chance to give back to the community that helped launch her career. Alongside her work with the orchestra, she will perform as a soloist with Orchestra Kingston next season and recently led a masterclass for music students at Queen's University.
