A cornerstone of the local arts scene.
Running annually since 1973, the Kingston Kiwanis Music Festival is a not-to-be-missed community-based, volunteer-driven event that brings together amateur performers from across Kingston and the surrounding area.
Participants compete or showcase their talents in a wide range of disciplines, including classical music, popular music, musical theatre, and speech arts.
Festival chair Elaine Pedlar tells us what it's all about.
At its core, the festival is about education and development. Performers receive feedback from professional adjudicators, helping them refine their skills and build confidence. Organizers say the goal is not just competition, but fostering a lifelong appreciation for the performing arts—especially among young people.
Pedlar says the proof of that is found in returning artists.
The event also serves as a stepping stone for higher-level competition, with some participants advancing to provincial festivals through the Ontario Music Festivals Association.
Each year wraps up with a “Highlights Concert,” showcasing standout performances from the festival and celebrating the region’s musical talent. This year, that free concert happens on April 28th at the Isabel Bader Centre.
Pedlar says the love of music is what draws her to every session, every year.
The Festival runs from March 26th to April 11th in a variety of different venues around the city. Go to kkmf.ca or check out their social media pages for all the details.
The Festival remains focused on enriching the community through music—one performance at a time.
