Red Shirt Day event at James R. Henderson Public School will support children and youth with disabilities.
Community members in Kingston are being encouraged to wear red and step out in support of accessibility and inclusion during the Red Shirt Day Walk for Accessibility and Inclusion later this month.
Community Engagement Officer Linda Clouthier explains when Easter Seals Ontario established the special day.
The event will take place Sunday, May 31 at 10 a.m. at James R. Henderson Public School as part of National AccessAbility Week. Organizers say the walk is meant to bring families, friends and supporters together to raise awareness for children and youth living with disabilities.
Hosted in partnership with KW Inspire and the Kingston Rotary Club, the event will support Easter Seals Ontario and help fund essential mobility and accessibility equipment for local children.
Clouthier explains the purpose behind the event.
She says raising awareness is the first step toward creating a more inclusive community.
Participants are invited to walk or run at their own pace while enjoying a welcoming community atmosphere filled with connection, laughter and support.
Organizers are also encouraging attendees to create fundraising teams and set donation goals to help expand access to life-changing equipment and services for children with physical disabilities across Canada.
