What's Good in Kingston: Help train a guide dog

Organization is looking for volunteers in Kingston to help train guide dogs.

The CNIB is looking for volunteers in the Kingston area to help train their guide dogs.

Volunteers would assist with a trainer in training new guide dogs and provide a place for the guide-dog-in-training to stay.

Amanda Critch is the Manager of Early Canine Development at CNIB Guide Dogs. It takes an average of two years to properly train a guide dog with the first year of training to take place inside a home.

Critch says the guide dog would go through basic training while staying at the home.

CNIB normally uses golden retrievers, Labrador retrievers, or a cross of the two breeds to train as guide dogs.

Critch says they are the ideal breed for guide dogs.

A fully-trained dog would then be paired with a person who is experiencing some level of visual impairment.

Critch explains some of the things a trained dog would do.

There are many kinds of volunteer roles that CNIB is looking for from puppy raiser to boarder. All the training of the guide dog is covered by the CNIB through donations.
