What's Good in Kingston: Great Lakes Museum celebrating 50 years in Kingston

There is a free event happening at the museum on September 7.

The Great Lakes Museum is celebrating their golden anniversary with a free event.

On Sunday Sept. 7, the museum is opening their doors to the public for their 50th birthday.

It will be a family-friendly event with children’s activities, community and heritage organization booths, live music from local band Brass Over Tea Kettle, behind-the-scenes museum tours, and a birthday cake.

The museum's visitor experience manager Claire Notman credits the work of the volunteers in helping keeping the museum open for the last 50 years.

In addition to the free events, there is a sneak-peek tour of the SS Keewatin.

The vessel arrived in Kingston in 2024 after the museum purchased the Edwardian-era passenger steamship.

Notham says this is an opportunity for people to see inside the last remaining ship from early 1900's.

The Great Lakes Museum started in 1975 by a group of divers who were conducting underwater archaeology in Lake Ontario.

Notman says the building where the museum is currently sits on Ontario St. is a national historic site with a very long history.

More information about the event is on the Great Lakes Museum website
