What's Good in Kingston: Former Kingston hockey player returns to the ice after 20 years for Pride weekend event

Matt Kenny says the community skate and hockey homecoming aims to create safer and more inclusive spaces in sport.

A former Kingston hockey player is returning to the ice for the first time in more than 20 years as part of a special Pride weekend event focused on inclusivity and community.

Matt Kenny will host Matt’s Hockey Homecoming & Community Pride Skate on June 13 at the INVISTA Centre in partnership with Tourism Kingston.

The event will feature a homecoming hockey game with Kenny and his former teammates, a free youth skills workshop, an inclusive coaching seminar and a community pride skate.

In 2021, Kenny was also diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Since then, he has become an advocate for LGBTQ+ inclusion in sports and now works with You Can Play to help create safer environments for athletes.

Kenny’s story has gained international attention and has been featured by many major outlets.

Now, Kenny is preparing for an emotional return to the ice during Kingston Pride Weekend through Matt’s Hockey Homecoming & Community Pride Skate on June 13 at the INVISTA Centre.

Kenny shares what the message is behind having an event like this.

The event will include a homecoming game with former teammates, youth programming and a community pride skate.
