What's Good in Kingston: Former CFLer named an ambassador at BGCSE

Yarker-native Jay Dearborn will speak to youth about succeeding in sport and in life.

An Olympian and former CFL player is joining the Boys and Girls Club South East.

Yarker-native Jay Dearborn was announced last week (Sept. 23) as BGCSE's Athlete and Education Ambassador.

Dearborn says the opportunity came when he was looking for a way to give back to the community.

Director of Resource Development and Communications Amanda Guarino says Dearborn displays the qualities that they hope youth will absorb.

Dearborn played three seasons in the CFL with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

It was while recovering from an injury during the 2019 season that he got interested in bobsledding. He trained with the Canadian bobsled team during the off-season and returned to the Roughriders for the 2021 season.

Dearborn was named to one of the three four-man teams that would represent Canada in 2022 Beijing Games.

One of his roles as an ambassador is to speak in front of both small and larger groups of youth about how you can succeed in sport and education.

Dearborn credits his upbringing that has enabled him to become the person he is today.

Guarino says it was important to have a local figure who is able to connect with youth in the community.

Dearborn will deliver a keynote speech to 1,000 high-school students at Sydenham High School and to over 250 corporate leaders at the Club’s signature gala Making a Difference Speakers Series in March 2026.
