Kingston is preparing to celebrate one of the most memorable moments in Canadian music history with Forever Hip, a community-wide tribute marking the 10th anniversary of The Tragically Hip's final hometown concert.
The marquee weekend takes place August 20 to 22, when thousands of residents and visitors are expected to gather in Kingston to relive and celebrate the band's historic farewell performance. Kingston Tourism's Moira Demorest gives us a taste of what to expect on the Thursday opening night.
Tourism Kingston is leading the initiative in partnership with the City of Kingston, the Downtown Kingston BIA, the Kingston Music Office, local businesses, artists, venues, and community organizations. Organizers say the broad community collaboration reflects the lasting impact The Tragically Hip has had on Kingston's identity and Canada's music scene. Demorest tells us of the collaborations that guarantee to make this weekend special.
Organizers say Forever Hip offers something for everyone, whether they're lifelong fans of The Tragically Hip or simply looking for a unique summer event. Demorest says the reasons for participating are countless.
The celebration begins Thursday, August 20, with a free community singalong in Springer Market Square led by Choir! Choir! Choir! Fans will also enjoy live tribute performances from Kingston favourites Miss Emily, The Abrams, and members of Kasador.
On Friday, August 21, visitors can take part in Music Walking Tours, browse a local merchandise market, and watch video tributes celebrating the band's legacy throughout the day. At 8 pm Springer Market Square will host a free outdoor screening of Long Time Running, the acclaimed documentary chronicling The Tragically Hip's emotional final cross-country tour and hometown concert following Gord Downie's cancer diagnosis.
The celebration culminates Saturday, August 22, when the community will once again gather in Springer Market Square to watch CBC's rebroadcast of the band's unforgettable final concert, recreating the shared experience that united thousands of fans in Kingston and millions across Canada in 2016. Even Kingston City Hall is in on the experience with their Music From Miles Around, sponsored by Empire Life. This is free, year-round exhibition in City Hall's Market Wing Culture Space.
The exhibition explores Kingston’s rich and far-reaching music history, from the sounds and traditions that predate the city to the places and artists still making noise today.
