The CIBC Run for the Cure returns to Kingston on Oct. 4, bringing together breast cancer survivors, supporters and advocates at St. Lawrence College.
This year’s Ambassador of Hope is Sarah Wynn, co-owner of Wynn Farms in Greater Napanee, who was diagnosed with breast cancer May 27 after a routine mammogram.
Wynn said she it was a "sneaky little bugger of a cancer" that was discovered and credits the screening with finding the disease.
She has since undergone a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction and has started chemotherapy. Wynn said her experience has motivated her to remind others about the importance of breast cancer screening.
The Kingston run is being organized by Diane Sabourin, who is marking her 17th year as run director. Sabourin lost her sister to breast cancer and said the event gives her a way to honour her memory.
Funds raised through the event support breast cancer research and detection equipment. Last year, the Kingston event raised more than $170,000.
The event begins with opening ceremonies at 10:15 a.m. The 5K starts at 11 a.m., followed by the 1K at 11:10 a.m. Participants can walk or run.
