This year’s drop-off is scheduled for this Saturday, Nov. 22, from 10 a.m. to noon at the INVISTA Centre.
The volunteer-run Kingston Basketeers have launched their 2025 season, inviting the community to help women moving from shelters into new chapters of safe, independent living.
Since 2019, the group has mobilized donations of more than 300 baskets and $8,800 in gift cards.
Chapter lead Claire LePlante explains how this initiative started in Kingston.
This year’s drop-off is scheduled for Saturday, November 22, from 10 a.m. to noon at the INVISTA Centre. Contributors can register at basketeers.org to donate a basket or gift cards.
LaPlante shares that a lot of the time, mothers are forgotten about this time of year.
Donations might include new household items, towels, small kitchen appliances, personal care products, pajamas, comfort items, and e-gift cards. Monetary gifts are directed 100% to gift card purchases.
LaPlante says that each basket is more than a collection of items, it’s a reminder someone cares.
The initiative supports women leaving emergency shelters such as Kingston Interval House and covers Kingston and Frontenac County. Though not a registered charity, volunteers aim to provide dignity, comfort and hope through each basket.
