Duo honoured for leadership in international education

Two St. Lawrence College (SLC) international students, Iovanna Rodriguez Moreno and Jorge Veloz Ortiz, have won the 2024 Elizabeth Paterson Award from the Canadian Bureau for International Education. The pair was recognized at CBIE2024 in Ottawa on Nov. 5 for their outstanding leadership and contributions to international education in Canada.

Originally computer engineering professors from Mexico, Iovanna and Jorge are now leaders at SLC’s Global Learning Centre. They’ve strengthened community ties and promoted cultural diversity through volunteer work and events.

Their achievements include organizing tax workshops, leading International Women’s Day activities, and supporting the Kingston International Student Symposium. They also developed the Kingston Immigration Partnership app, helping new residents.

Ining Chao, Director of Global Partnerships, praised their efforts to foster belonging among students. SLC President Glenn Vollebregt highlighted their leadership, saying their success reflects the college’s commitment to a global learning environment.
